Last night we saddled up to the sushi bar at Maru on Burnet. We had heard the no-frills Allandale establishment had some of the freshest fish in town. We couldn’t tell because every item we ordered came swimming in “secret” sauce. Although the rolls were tasty (one that we particularly enjoyed had spicy salmon on the inside and salmon sashimi on the outside), the unagi sushi was just so-so.
He says: Family-friendly neighborhood sushi joint is utilitarian but worth checking out if you are in the area. Wouldn’t necessarily recommend it on a weekend night, unless you are in the mood for something simple and low key.
She says: The welcoming staff, quick service and standard roll choices make for an easy dining in option (I also noted customers picking up take-out). For the carb-conscious, the barely there layer or rice on the sushi makes Maru a good choice…but remember to also ask to hold the sauce.
