To inspire our first review, we visited one of our favorite Second Street hot spots, Lambert’s. We had a 9 o’clock reservation on NYE and were seated promptly. The mood was festive and they were packed with revelers as well as the usual downtown crowd; however they had not planned well and already ran out of cornbread. The baby boar ribs, stacked like jenga pieces, were spiced to perfection and fell right off the bone. Their version of fried green tomatoes with lump crab meat is a complimentary balance of hot and crisp and cold and fresh. Since it was a special night, we passed on chicken (Ed. note: theirs is some of the best around) and got the brisket, which was dry but edible. We used the meat to sop up their delicious trio of sauces and green chile cheese grits which truly are magical. To finish the meal, we had a pear crisp with ginger ice cream. It was good but not memorable. Lambert’s, even on an extraordinarily busy night, held their own and remains one of our top picks for consistency and fun atmosphere.
He says: Reliable BBQ joint dressed up as a tony dinner destination.
She says: Where a certain Houston set came to play on NYE. To our dismay, for the partygoers it was more about imbibing and parading in 4” heels than ringing in 2009 with Austin’s finest fancy bbq.
