We're Eating Again...and mostly out of trailers
Last night we tried East Side King and loved every flavor packing bite. The pork belly buns are nearly as good as Momofuku’s. The Veggie Meshi is the perfect crunchy yet soft roasted fried brussels sprout/ garlic rice combo with just the right hint of sweetness. Hands down, he shining star of the meal was the beet home fries. Don’t let the name fool you…they’re the...

Sushi Showdown
After having a great experience at Pirhana next door to Max’s we thought we’d try Zushi Sushi next to Mean Eyed Cat. Pirhana:P Terry’s::Zushi:McD’s. In other words if you are looking for downtown sushi, skip Zushi and head to Pirhana which is an all around better experience.
Public Service Announcement: Max's Wine Dive
We went to Max’s to try to their new “lunch” yesterday and found out its not lunch at all, but rather their regular dinner menu. Their prices are high to begin with and especially for lunch when everyone else in town has a separate lunch menu. Don’t be fooled.

Frank Bruni Interview
Big thanks to Mike Sutter (Austin American-Statesman food critic) for asking Frank Bruni (New York Times food critic) a question for us in a recent interview.
Mike Sutter: We asked readers through Twitter if they had questions for you. Here’s one: ‘I would love to know what unique characteristics are common among great restaurants. What makes what might be an otherwise...

Whata Whataburger →
No, this isn’t a shameless plug for one of the brands I’ve been working on this summer, but rather a genuine endorsement of what I think is the best fast-casual burger around. For the non-native Texans like me, you probably don’t know much about the orange A-line roofs. I can promise you that they’re the go-to spot for juicy and well-seasoned burgers “just like you...

Mambo Berry green tea froyo
At $4 a cup (+ .50 per topping) it’s pricey, but high quality and worth the stroll over to the SOCO trailers if you’re already in the area. I like to top mine with coconut.

Enoteca Vespaio
Once you get past the snooty hostesses, a pleasant meal can be had at Enoteca. Our picks include the antipasti sampler (you choose one dish for $5 or 3 for $12), cozze con patate fritte (moules frites) and the calamari panini. Be preapred, however, as the formo panini is plated as a heaping mound of fried calamri over a baguette sliced open with a shred of lettuce and slice of tomato on the...
Hotel Bar/Happy Hour Dining
This week we sampled the happy hour specials at two classic Austin hotels. First, at Roaring Fork at the Stephen F. Austin, we had the “Big Ass” burger and guacamole. The burger deserves its name, as we were stuffed after splitting what comes topped with cheddar, bacon and pickles, and is accompanied by a sizeable portion of fries. The guac is listed on the menu as “made to...
Woodland (the)
For simple American fare and better than average cocktails, head to the Woodland at the South end of South Congress. We’ve had success at dinner with the salmon, pork chop and veggie burger. The one unfortunate aspect about the bistro is that the menu tends to change without much notice. We’re ok with changes to take advantage of special seasonal produce, but not for the sake of cost...

Cipollina Disappoints →
We have been dining at Cipollina since we moved to Austin in 2003, and have always considered it a pleasant place to go for mid-priced non-fussy Italian. Last night we went to sit outside and enjoy the Clarksville scene. He ordered the farmers’ vegetable plate which showcased local red & gold beets as well as orange & purple carrots. She ordered a ceasar salad and spaghetti dish. All...
Lady's Tex-Mex
She says: Despite dining at Maudie’s a handful of times, I did not notice the fantastic lighter fare option until last night. The “Ladies Plate” comes with one taco (soft or crispy, chicken or beef) and a guacamole salad. The size and simplicity of the dish are spot on. It’s only adorned with a light sprinking of cheese and some diced tomatoes. For an extra punch, I like...

Ranch 616 →
He says: Recommended by our friend Adam H., we enjoyed lunch al fresco today at Ranch 616. The place was packed and the outdoor fireplace added ambiance. The Jalapeno-Maiz Trout was hot and crunchy and sautéed with jalapenos and cilantro. The menu says that it comes topped with a cactus pear sauce, but my plebeian palate couldn’t make that out. We ordered the tabasco onion rings on the side...
The Yogurt Spot
For all of you transplants from the coasts, all natural yogurt is finally making its way to Austin. A few businesses have come and go, but I’m hoping The Yogurt Spot on Guadalupe is here to stay. It’s more like the East Village’s 16 Handles (there are 16 flavors) than Pinkberry, so while you’re not getting the pure tart or green tea experience, you can be creative with your...
